Alice Cooper’s memoir “Devil On My Shoulder” becomes a No. 1 bestseller

“Devil On My Shoulder”, Alice Cooper’s third memoir, has become an international bestseller since its 6 October release, topping the charts of The New York Times, Amazon and The Sunday Times, according to Billboard. The 464-page book is out in hardcover, paperback, ebook and as an audiobook narrated by Cooper himself.

Cooper told Billboard that 90% of the stories in the book are true. He now calls his 1976 autobiography, “Me, Alice: The Autobiography of Alice Cooper”, “a drunken rant”, and says neither it nor “Golf Monster” was really pushed. This time, he explained, the aim was not to invent a persona but to come to terms with the man behind it.

The memoir covers his addiction in the ’70s and ’80s and his later sobriety, his return to Christianity and the tension between the stage character and the real person. It also traces the original Alice Cooper Band from its start as the Earwigs in 1964 to the 1975 split after “Muscle of Love”. Cooper describes the break as a separation rather than a bitter breakup: going solo with “Welcome to My Nightmare” was a gamble that sent both sides down separate paths.

Born Vincent Damon Furnier in Detroit in 1948, Alice Cooper is a Rock & Roll Hall of Famer whose newest studio album, according to MusicBrainz, is “Road” (2023). On 5 October mbuzz reported that he told The Telegraph drug addiction nearly killed him. He is currently touring North America, with stops in Richmond, Atlantic City, St. Louis, San Diego, San Jose, Las Vegas and Windsor, Ontario.
