Earth, Wind & Fire’s “September” returns to the Hot 100 for the first time since 1979
Earth, Wind & Fire’s “September” has re-entered the Billboard Hot 100 at No. 45 on the chart dated Oct. 3, according to Billboard. It is the song’s first appearance since the March 10, 1979 chart, when it stood at No. 83. It peaked at No. 8 in its original run and now totals 18 weeks on the chart.
For the tracking week of Sept. 18-24 in the US, Luminate data shows 6 million official streams (up 51%), 3,000 song sales (up 236%) and 3.3 million in radio audience (up 137%). The song debuts at No. 46 on Streaming Songs. Its opening line about the 21st night of September has become a meme that lifts consumption around that date.
The group last visited the Hot 100 with “Sunday Morning” in 1993. It has 33 Hot 100 hits, including seven top 10s and a No. 1, “Shining Star,” in 1975. The 1998 “Greatest Hits” album returns to Top R&B Albums at No. 14.
