Olivia Rodrigo and Chappell Roan release “Expectations” remix with David Byrne video

Olivia Rodrigo and Chappell Roan released a joint version of “Expectations” on 15 October, along with a video featuring Talking Heads frontman David Byrne. According to Rolling Stone, it is Rodrigo’s first-ever remix, and Roan contributes a new verse, tweaking the lyrics to reference a disappointing female suitor.

The video is built around retro game shows: the two compete on “The Big Expectations Show” and face off with their “families” in Sister Squabble, a Family Feud spoof, while Byrne plays the fictional host Johnny Johnson. It opens with Roan’s sarcastic line “Oh, Olivia does remixes now.”

In an interview with Apple Music’s Zane Lowe, reported by Billboard, Roan said this is the first feature she has ever done and that she loves “making things a little gay.” Rodrigo recalled writing the second verse in the studio while telling Roan about bad experiences dating boys. She said she first wrote the song as a mantra, citing Kendrick Lamar’s “HUMBLE.”, and that Roan’s attitude and swagger had influenced it.

“Expectations” debuted at No. 20 on the Billboard Hot 100 in June 2026 and appears on “You Seem Pretty Sad for a Girl So in Love”, Rodrigo’s third studio album, which debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard 200. Both artists work with producer Dan Nigro, and Roan opened Rodrigo’s Sour and Guts world tours.

Olivia Rodrigo is an American singer-songwriter and actress, born in 2003 in Murrieta. The album came out on 12 June 2026, according to MusicBrainz.
