Olivia Rodrigo releases her first Christmas song, with Cynthia Nixon in the video

Olivia Rodrigo released “take me home (4 christmas)”, her first original holiday song, on 5 November, along with a video featuring actress Cynthia Nixon and Ben Marshall, a Saturday Night Live cast member and part of the comedy trio Please Don’t Destroy. She wrote the song with Dan Nigro and Amy Allen, and Nigro produced it.

The video opens with Rodrigo cleaning up after an all-night party, then imagining Marshall taking her home to his family for the holidays. Nixon plays his mother, and the scenes, which Rolling Stone compares to The Family Stone, show Rodrigo playing charades, making gingerbread houses and helping carve the Christmas bird. Rodrigo has told Jimmy Fallon that Sex and the City is her favourite show, and a line from Nixon’s character Miranda Hobbs inspired a lyric in “Maggots for Brains”.

The single follows her “Expectations” remix with Chappell Roan, which reached No. 3 on the Billboard Hot 100 and came with a video starring David Byrne. Both songs appear on “you seem pretty sad for a girl so in love”, a Billboard 200 chart-topper she is touring on the Unraveled Tour through summer 2027. Back in 2020, Rodrigo covered Joni Mitchell’s “River” for a holiday special of High School Musical: The Musical: The Series.

Olivia Rodrigo is an American singer-songwriter and actress, born in 2003 in Murrieta. On 2 November, mbuzz reported that she had announced her first Christmas song.
