Paul McCartney explains the happy accident behind The Beatles’ “Rubber Soul” cover

Paul McCartney has written about how the cover of The Beatles’ “Rubber Soul” was made, for the reissue of the 1965 album released on 2 October, 60 years after the original. According to NME, the edition is heading for Number One in the UK albums chart.

McCartney recalls that photographer Robert Freeman projected his images onto a white piece of cardboard the size of an album cover. While the band chose a shot, the cardboard slipped and stretched the image. Rather than treat it as a mistake, the band kept the elongated look because it echoed the album’s title.

The Super Deluxe edition comes as a 5-LP or 4-CD box set with 68 tracks, new stereo and Dolby Atmos mixes by Giles Martin and Sam Okell, the original mono mix and the US Capitol version. It also includes the “Day Tripper / We Can Work It Out” single, unreleased session recordings and home demos, and an 88-page book with an introduction by McCartney.
