Suede working on 11th album, tentatively described as “anarcho-punk”

Suede are already working on their eleventh album, which will complete the trilogy begun with “Autofiction” in 2022 and continued with “Antidepressants” in 2025. Brett Anderson half-jokingly labelled it the band's “anarcho-punk” record in an interview with NME's Andrew Trendell at the Mercury Prize 2026 ceremony in Newcastle, according to OndaRock.

Anderson said “Autofiction” was their punk record and “Antidepressants” their post-punk one, though he is not yet sure the new label will stick. Many of the lyrics deal with tribes and belonging. Guitarist Neil Codling said the writing is well advanced and the band hope to enter the studio soon, aiming for simple, direct songs that may be even more anthemic than the last two albums.

“Antidepressants” was shortlisted for the Mercury Prize, which went to Raye. Suede won it in 1993 with their self-titled debut. Bassist Mat Osman recalled the band started celebrating very early, sure they would not win, while Anderson mostly remembers being booed and enjoying “a bit of antagonism”.

One or two new songs may appear on the band's UK tour with Manic Street Preachers, starting on 28 October at the OVO Arena in Glasgow. Anderson said the two bands have known each other since around 1994, and drummer Simon Gilbert compared touring together to going on holiday with friends.

Suede formed in London in 1989 and are one of Britain's leading alternative rock bands of the 1990s.
