Wyclef Jean and Carlos Santana release a “Freedom” remix with a video

Wyclef Jean and Carlos Santana have released “Freedom (Carlos Santana Remix),” a new version of Jean’s song “Freedom,” together with a music video, according to Consequence. The pairing reunites the two 27 years after Santana’s 1999 hit “Maria Maria.”

The remix adds Santana’s guitar to a track that asks what freedom means in today’s world. The original appeared on Jean’s “Clef Notes – Quantum Leap, Vol. 1,” the first part of a planned seven-album project.

Jean co-wrote and co-produced “Maria Maria” for Santana’s album “Supernatural.” The song spent ten weeks at No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 in 2000 and won the Grammy for Best Pop Performance by a Duo or Group with Vocal. Its guitar melody was later sampled by DJ Khaled for his 2017 hit “Wild Thoughts,” featuring Rihanna and Bryson Tiller. Consequence also recently placed the band Santana in its ranking of The 100 Best Bands of All Time.

Wyclef Jean, born in 1969 in Croix-des-Bouquets, Haiti, is a rapper whose music blends East Coast hip-hop, reggae fusion and contemporary R&B. His newest studio album is “Q Theory - Quantum Leap, Vol. 2,” released on 28 August 2026, according to MusicBrainz.
