John Mayer releases “Tom and Jerry” and launches his own label, Sob Rock Records
John Mayer released “Tom and Jerry” on 23 October 2026, his first solo release since 2021. The single also launches his own record label, Sob Rock Records, set up in partnership with Mercury Records. The song premiered a day earlier, on 22 October, on his SiriusXM channel, Life With John Mayer.
According to Guitar.com, Mayer wrote and produced the track with Grammy-winning producer Blake Slatkin. It was recorded at Chaplin Studios in Los Angeles and mixed by veteran engineer Serban Ghenea. The title comes from the name Mayer gave the voice memo he made when the idea first came to him. In an Instagram post he credited a group of “incredibly talented and deeply dedicated artists” for shaping the sound.
Speaking about the label, Mayer said, as quoted by Rolling Stone, that the path from creative vision to execution had never been easier. Mercury chairman and CEO Tyler Arnold called him one of the greatest artists of all time and said the company was excited to be part of his next chapter.
The American musician, born in 1977 in Bridgeport, released his eighth studio album, “Sob Rock”, in 2021. He recently announced a large residency at the Las Vegas Sphere for 2027, and in September unveiled, with PRS and Land Rover Defender, new Defender-inspired colours for his signature guitar, the Silver Sky.
