Ryan Gosling's band Dead Man's Bones returns with first new music in 17 years
Dead Man's Bones, the indie rock band formed by actor Ryan Gosling and musician Zach Shields, has announced new music for 27 October, 17 years after its only album. The news came in a dark, Halloween-timed teaser video posted on social media.
According to B92, Gosling's wife Eva Mendes shared the announcement on Instagram with the message "He kept his promise". Stereogum notes that the label ANTI- also posted the video, suggesting it will release the new material, as it did the 2009 album.
The American duo formed in 2007 in Los Angeles. Their self-titled debut, “Dead Man's Bones”, came out on ANTI- in 2009 and was recorded with backing from the Silverlake Conservatory Children's Choir. According to B92, the record was originally meant as the soundtrack to a play about a love story between a monster and a ghost. The band played a handful of shows around Halloween 2009.
Since then Gosling has become one of Hollywood's biggest names. His film “Project Hail Mary” is among the year's largest hits, his next projects are the Star Wars film “Starfighter” and Marvel's “Ghost Rider”, and he is set to join the Marvel universe in that role in 2028. As a singer he reached a wide audience with “I'm Just Ken” from “Barbie”, which he also performed at the 2024 Oscars, while “City of Stars”, sung with Emma Stone in “La La Land”, won an Oscar in 2017.
