Shakira and Maluma reunite after eight years on merengue single “AGUA”

Shakira and Maluma have released “AGUA,” a merengue-influenced single and their first collaboration in eight years. According to Consequence, the two Colombian artists trade vocals over tropical percussion, playing on a contrast between water and desire. Infomusic notes the song draws on deeper Caribbean roots and comes with a music video.

Maluma began teasing the track on TikTok earlier this month without naming his collaborator, then confirmed Shakira's involvement with a photo of the pair.

“AGUA” is their fifth official collaboration, following “Chantaje” (2016), “Trap” (2017) and “Clandestino” (2018). “Chantaje” spent 11 nonconsecutive weeks atop Billboard's Hot Latin Songs and peaked at No. 51 on the Hot 100. The release coincides with the start of a 12-show Madrid residency on September 18, part of the final stretch of the “Las Mujeres Ya No Lloran World Tour.”
