Grian Chatten says Fontaines D.C. had no idea AI was used in “Marianne” video

Fontaines D.C. frontman Grian Chatten has told The Los Angeles Times that the band were never told artificial intelligence had been used to make the music video for “Marianne”. According to NME, the use came to light after the video credited “AI artists”.

Chatten said he called his management as soon as he found out. He believes someone on the visual effects team brought AI into the workflow, and said that although more than 100 people worked on the video, not even the label or management knew, calling it “a real shock”. He described it as ironic and contradictory, given that the new album “Dopamine Chamber” deals with isolation, social collapse and dependence on technology. The band have now written into their contracts that AI cannot be used in their videos, and Chatten said AI is “rendering our souls obsolete”.

“Dopamine Chamber” came out on 16 October, led by the single “Marianne” and featuring “Where Is Gone?” with Rosalía. The band's upcoming tour includes two nights at Slane Castle and two at Manchester's Heaton Park, with support from Hayley Williams, Little Simz and Viagra Boys, plus 2027 dates in Italy, Germany, Japan, Australia and New Zealand. They will also headline Primavera Sound in Barcelona in June 2027.

Fontaines D.C. are a rock band formed in Dublin in 2017. Their previous album, “Romance” (2024), was nominated for the Mercury Prize. In October mbuzz reported that Liam Gallagher had posted on X that the band were not good enough to open for Oasis.
